Does depression make it more likely that one will abuse drugs?

For instance, if one is diagnosed with major depressive symptoms, is there the possibility that he or she will be less able to resist the temptation from peers already using drugs?
Or will the depressed person be likely to want to self-medicate and therefore use drugs?
