Question Two Gods in the Bible: The Loving God and the Jealous God

Are there two different Gods in the Bible? This may sound stupid to some people but How can the Jealous God of the Old Testament be the same as the loving God of the New Testament? How Can the Jealous God who delivered instant punishment in the Old Testament be the same as the Loving Heavenly Father who loves, cherishes, and forgives all his children in the New Testament. Is the Bible talking about two distinct Gods? take a very good look at these two quotations:
1. I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me (Exodus 20:5)

1. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:6).

Are there two Gods in bible? what do you think?

As an athiest i don't think my reply will suprise you. To me the reason for this anomaly is simply that these books were written by two different groups of people with different ideas of god. Same as the talmud and quran. Same thing. Strange though god would be so different if not conradictary between these books. All written by simple men.

A simple answer: no man, woman, or child can define God.

The bible should not be used to define God. It matters not what they say about God, only that they recognize him.

There where many meanings lost in translations of the bible. Many, many meanings.

Yes, there are two gods in the bible.

The god of Sacrifice and Blood

and

The God of Love

One is the "god of this world"

The other is the God of Heaven

One is the God of Peace, the other the God of War.

One, the god of the living, the other the god of the dead.

One is Jealous, the god of this world. He has a right to be jealous because there is one greater than he. Thats who he's jealous of. Thats who he is inferior to.

The god of this world is a planetary diety in rebellion against his god and father. His rebellion is being allowed to a certain point to prove a point. In the eleventh hour his rule will be crushed and this deputy diety will be judged and placed in prison for his many crimes.

It is this god who gave us the law on the mountain of Sin in the desert of Sin (Sinai)

It is the law that condemns us

It is this god that would not show us his face or tell us his name.

The god of the burning bush. A bush that was not consumed. The real god is a consuming fire.

It is the god who chose a prince of Egypt to lead his children into the desert where they languished traveling in circles until all who left egypt died in the desert never setting foot in the promised land. Even Moses. and when Moses died this god showed up to claim the body and argued with Michael over it. What claim did the Devil have on the body of Moses that he and the prince Michael would contend? The claim was that Moses was working for him. This is why Moses lifted a serpent on a cross in the wilderness. An object later destroyed as an idol. The serpent, symbol of this god of this world.

God is love

and love is never jealous

Therefore God is not jealous. Not the real one anyway.

The real God has no one or no thing to be jealous over or about.

There are no two Gods in the bible as much as I know. God said He is a two-edged sword, it means you can never predict him. He said, "to a righteous man, I show myself righteous and to the crooked minded, i show myself crooked. Therefore, we should bear in mind that God is what He wants to be at any particular situation. There is no other God beside Him. He is omini-too-much!

Yes I have thought this for a while especially from Genesis 1 and 2, the God who drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden is the LORD God and there is mention of another God , God in Genesis. God creates heaven and earth and the LORD God makes earth and heaven, like their working in 2 directions. The LORD God who tells A and E not to eat of the tree in the middle of the garden I think tells them they will die in the DAY they eat of it and they don't also seems unfair to treat them the way he does and banish them because they eat a piece of fruit, especially as THE BIBLE says Eve saw the tree was (in itallics KJV) good for food. So im very interested to read the interpreation of two Gods and the part about Moses putting the serpent on the pole for people to look to- wondering what Jesus meant when he said just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son OF Man be lifted up , was he saying he was to be lifted up in contrast to the serpent God that Moses was symbolizing. Wondering though why Jesus does not make mention of the God of the Old Testament being wrong??? Can you help?

there is just one God in the Bible but remember that there are three distinct persons in this One God. The Holy Spirit is one Distinct Person. The Father is One Distinct Person and the Son is One Distinct Person so don't be confused when the same God acts differently.

Greetings,

There are two perceptions of God in the Bible - that of the Old Testament (eye for an eye) and that of the New Testament (offer the other cheek).

More importantly, there are two threads of Christianity in the New Testament - that of steel (Paul) and that of gold (Jesus).

For a Christian, it is important to distinguish the two.

One cannot take the Bible literally and be Christian.

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

Wow Kofi, those who love their religion are going to get their feathers ruffled. Those who have their eyes opened can see, and, of course, there are those blinded by religion who can't see beyond their religious doctrine.

Then I have read the post by an unregistered person who says, quote: "Wondering though why Jesus does not make mention of the God of the Old Testament being wrong??? Can you help"?

All I can say that would prove Kofi is correct in the idea of two gods and that Jesus did prove there are two Gods is when Jesus said to Jewry their god was the devil and his God is the Father God. Oh that hurts because the god of christianity is the same god as the god of Jewry, the god that requires the killing of innocent blood as a payment for sin. The god of no mercy but an eye for an eye, A death for a death.:o

two Gods? I don't even know if there exist even one god. What if there is no god at all? nobody can prove there is a god. these may be just products of our faulty imaginations. Lets forget about the 2 for now and concentrate on understanding one first then we may add the other god later on.

I don't even know if there exist even one god. This post is not about what exists in your head. If you have the capacity to read what Kofi was referring to is the two Gods in the 'BIBLE' not the nothing in your head. Some folks have a dozen gods floating around in their heads but in this post we are talking about what's in the bible not about a bunch of what ifs'.

But thanks anyway for the courage to post something. Many reading these posts cannot even turn on their brain to say anything. By the way, read about the two gods in the bible and tell us what you think about them.

This is a hard question. For me the question is how did the God of Jesus who gave Himself to die an awful death on the cross, be the God in the Old Testament. The "Jealous" God is one example of a God of Wrath. For me it seems that God wants my worship, my obedience, may faith in him alone. The people in Egypt believed in many Gods, all fighting with one another, and you had to try satisfy enough of them to keep safe. This commandment says no, put your faith in One God, trust your life to this one God, the God who brought you out of slavery in Egypt. If you go back to satisfying many gods, you will end up back in slavery, because you have lost your direction. And when the slaves from Egypt came to the promised land and saw the fortifications, all the arms and the giants, they lost their faith in God, so they spent 40 years in the wilderness, learning that the God of Abraham could take care of them, he could supply water, he could supply food. This is the same God Jesus called Father, because in His love, he still calls us to trust only him to keep us and love us. He doesn't promise a soft life, indeed in Romans 8 it talks of God still loving us when awful things are happening to us. We get to choose to love and obey God and Jesus or to wander in the wilderness, stuck in our fears, our selfishness, our hate and our "me first" attitudes. Eventually these fears can lead us into our own hell. But Jesus offers heaven if we really trust and follow his teachings, this is a good kind of jealousy.

God is not jealous of you. He is jealous for you. God created you and he can destroy you anytime but he loves and cares for you that is why you are alive today. There is just one God in the Bible. He rewards the good(that is when we call him the loving God) and punishes the wicked(that is when we call him the jealous God).

Bible Re: Two Gods in the Bible - The Loving God and the Jealous God

(KJV Gen 1:26) "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness"

Notice that God is saying "us". This implies that one or more OTHER BEINGS existed at the time Man was created.

Notice that since he is using the word "us" in the creation of man, that "God" AND these OTHER BEINGS were involved in the creation of man. God wasn't the only one doing it.

Notice that God is saying "our image, after our likeness", which implies that these OTHER BEINGS are the SAME as God, because God's image and likeness, and these OTHER BEINGS image and likeness, are one and the same.

Notice that since God IS CREATING Man in "our image, after our likeness", that means man IS the SAME as God. Isn't that what "our image, after our likeness" means? "Our image, after our likeness" implies that the end result will be the same as the maker.

Now from what I see, there are more than one God's here, which now include man as a God. However, since I believe everything is ultimately unified, and is scientifically demonstrated true, I have come to the conclusion that the word "God" was created by Man to provide a reference point of understanding when explaining to others the union of all beings as part of a singular being, namely God.

The language that is used to explain creation, involves multiple God references, in order to transmit understanding to the listener, the various aspects of creation, and the management of that creation, using the highest known principles of creation, thus far known at THAT time.

"which implies that these OTHER BEINGS are the SAME as God, because God's image and likeness, and these OTHER BEINGS image and likeness, are one and the same." That is true.

God is eternal because He was there before the beginning. God was there before the beginning but He was not there alone according to the Bible which means there was another eternal being there in the beginning with God and that eternal being is what we don't know. Catholics for example added another eternal being to form a TRINITY which I don't quite understand. Man is a mortal being and we live in time. However, that being in the beginning is immortal/eternal because he was there before time and lives outside of time. So it makes sense to say there was another God there in the beginning with God the Father (God of Abraham). That God could be a Goddess(the wife of God) or the sister of God.

We are the images of God and we are "male" and "female" and maybe God was talking to His wife when He said let "us" make man in our own image. In other words, man is the image of God the Father and woman is the image of the Goddess who was there in the beginning with God (the wife of God). It makes perfect sense that way. God said a man and a woman will come together to become one flesh. We (male and female) are the images of God and His wife who are one in nature. Traditional African worshipers for example believe in a goddess (the mother earth) who some consider the wife of God the Almighty. Not just Traditional African worshipers. Even some Native Americans believe in this mother goddess.

That God who was there in the beginning with God the father could as well be the Son of God as Christians believe. That God could be the brother of God as some Hindus believe. That God could be a different God altogether (the Jealous God) as some Mormons believe.

The god of the old testament and god of the new testament are two different gods.
The truth is that modern Christianity (including parts of the Bible) would be almost completely unrecognizable to the original Christians. In fact, it may shock you to know, but Christ is actually a sun deity. Where as the old testament god, jehova, is ALLAH...the racist, sexist, murderer who makes laws about stoning women when they are raped. However, Constantine and King James of England changed and used this religion for political control over the masses. The Pope is a political entity...period. The stories of the gnostic christians were politicized and attached to the old testament in order to make a land claim in the MidEast...hence the Crusades
. youtube.com/watch?v=Kla-BcN8u8QThis video does a great job of showing what christianity WAS really about.

Default Re: Two Gods in the Bible - The Loving God and the Jealous God

I recently thought that their was one god in the bible..The jealous God symbolizing our Jealousy , thus through our will and seeking justice God works through us to serve justice thus making Him seem uncaring..When God blesses, its because we do, once again doing our will through him. Kinda like a big consciousness that we control..God seeing no good or evil just Doing our will the same as we are doing Gods will ..Working through us. Well I know that hard to understand. So I had a revelation last night about two Gods in the bible and thats what lead me here. I think this will require more research but just feels good to know I'm not the only one wondering about this..

There's only one God who treat us differently and love us differently as much as our physical parents love and treat us differently so is God,the prime way of knowing God is through nature (Romans 1:20),if you want to invoke ur parents blessing you conduct yourself in the manner that will appeas your parents and eventually they are obliged to bless you but if you attact contrary the opposite is true, they will not love you at all
