Re: why do people believe in God and why do so many people serve God?
"I have no reason not to believe in God."
Do you have any reason not to believe in Zeus? Do you have any reason not to believe in dragons living in the core of Jupiter? How is it possible to prove the non-existence of anything which actually doesn't exist? The burden of proof is on those making the positive assertion that God exists.
Moreover, if God exists, why go through the trouble to completely erase his involvement in the universe? Why would God give man the capacity to understand His universe and then hide Himself from all observation? And don't say it's part of the divine plan, because ascribing the known to the invisible proves nothing. Why does prayer not appear to work? There are a million problems with the concept of a creator that religion can't even begin to answer.
I'm an atheist primarily because of the complete absence of evidence. To finally answer your question, so many people believe in god (or are religious) because that is what their family and society expects of them and teaches them. Religion is also a comforting way to deal with issues that are scary or difficult to think about (such as our purpose in the universe, death of body and mind). Note that neither of these have any relation to truth.
