Re: The meaning of 666 - mark of the beast
Jessika,
You ask many good questions and I sense you are on a quest of understanding.
Hopefully, my comments will help you in humbly responding to your question.
As you may know, John wrote the Book of Revelation while on an isolated island known as Patmos.
Domecian, a ego-maniac, claiming deity and demanding the worship of his subjects, launched a wave of persecution against Christians. Refusing to worship this madman, John was banished to this rocky, barren seemly God-forsaken island following a failed attempt to boil him alive.
That's the way it always is. Truly, the things I know about the Lord weren't in church, a teaching tape, or a bible commentary. The things I know about the Lord were learned on my own 'Patmoses', my own tribulations, my own difficulties. And the same is true for you.
When you get back the medical report which says you have cancer, when the divorce papers are sent your way, when the business goes belly-up, when the relationship doesn't work out, when your child runs away-you will have a choice on that seemly forgotten island whether to launch out in spiritual rebellion, or whether to await fresh revelation...
I find it ironic that pastors are reticent to teach the book of Revelation, and believers are hesitant to read it because they think the book is hard to understand. So many times we want to use the bible as if it were the DaVinci code with hidden secrets that only a few can understand. Chapter 1 is the Revelation of the Glorified Christ. In chapters 2 & 3 we see the entire scope of church history. In chapters 4 & 5 we see the Church taken up to heaven. In Chapters 6 through 19, we see the Tribulation. In Chapter 20, the Millennium.
As you read through this book, always bear in mind that it was given not because believers were trying to figure out the nuances of eschatology, but because they were watching their brothers and sisters dying as a result of inconceivable persecution. 'Where is the Lord?' they must have cried. 'We believe in Him. We've given our lives to Him, but what's happening?' They needed a revelation of Jesus to see the Jesus is in control, that he is on the throne. Thus, this message coming from John would give great comfort to their hearts. The overarching theme of this book: Jesus is on the throne, and his is in control. Things are going according to plan, and He's coming back.
The banking industry has been pushing hard for a cashless society for many decades. Why? Every check costs banks .35 and .60 cents to process. Electronic transactions, on the other hand, cost 1 cent. Banks have a very real interest in seeing us move toward an electric funds transfer system.
The government loses close to a trillion dollars a year in the 'underground' economy- the system employees are paid in cash in order to avoid the paper trail to avoid taxes. Crime, drugs, counterfeit money, stolen identity are problems we see on a daily basis. We're not far from this... In 2006, the FDA approved the info chip to be implanted in the forearm or upperarm. It contains records and identification of their owner. This technology has been around for years for your pet. Digital Angel did this project.
The only solution seems to be what John prophesied 2000 years ago when he wrote that anti-Christ will require everyone to receive a mark in his right hand or forehead.
Now, as to the Mark of the beast, one problem, John tells us it will seal the fate , doom the one who accepts it. You see, with the acceptance of his number, one pledges total allegiance to anti-Christ. That is why the Lord warns people- not only in the Word but with two Prophets in Jerusalem, the 144,000 spoke of in Revelation, and an angel that will fly across the sky, saying, 'Don't take the mark.' But most will. Most will say, 'It makes too much sense not to.'
" Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man;and his number is six hundred threescore and six" Revelation 13:18
Knowledge is one thing, but wisdom is another. Knowledge is information. Wisdom is application. Theories abound as to what the number 666 refers. Some believe it refers to a type of UPC code. Others suggest that because in both Greek and Hebrew, letters are used as numbers, the letters in anti-Christ's name add up to 666. I don't believe this is the primary point John is making.
In Genesis 4 you will see the account of someone else who was marked with 'the number of man'...Cain. After his self-sufficient sacrifice was rejected by God, Cain killed Abel. As a result, Cain was banished into the wilderness, with a mark to protect him.
'Understand.' said John, 'the number of the beast is the number of man"666.' Throughout scripture, 6 is the number of the flesh. The fleshly Cain mentality can rise up in you and me. How? 'The sweat I pour out, the good I do, the things I accomplish are going to be more impressive to God than just killing a bloody lamb. Through my energy, my initiative, my efforts I will impress God.'
Some say, 'I'm a Rotarian, I'm a Republican; I attend PTO; I coach Little League. I'm putting a pretty good basket of fruit for the Lord. I don't need this bloody stuff: Christianity, bible study, Communion. I can do something much more intellectually creative, much more beautiful. I can do it. I can pull it off. But the Bible says, 'All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) And because you're marked with you own efforts, you're marked for damnation. You might come real close, but there's no cigar for self-attempted goodness because you are a sinner, I'm a sinner. You've fallen short. Even believers can be caught up in the spirit of 666 when they say. 'I don't need to pray. I can figure out my career on my own. I'm reading books; I'm going to seminars; I know what's best for my kids, my family, my future.
We're either of the spirit of Cain, saying, 'I'm a hard worker. I'm a creative thinker. I'm a good person'-or of Abel who's humble, and broken, and dependent upon God.
'Revelation 14:9-10
And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation...'
The third angel says,
Don't take the mark of the beast.' But the world, by and large, will buy into anti-Christ's diabolical plan.
May God keep you from the number of man, the mark of Cain, the mark of the beast.
Blessings,
Bluemax
