Smile The 21st century is an age of nuclear bombs and nuclear families

The 21st century is an age of nuclear bombs and nuclear families. Traditionally, every society around the world has had a culture of 'Joint Families'. But with double incomes and pressing space constraints this is rapidly disappearing.

What do you prefer? Nuclear or Joint? Both have their pros and cons...let's discuss. Because if we evaluate our reasons, we can also evaluate our value systems.

Yeah both nuclear & joint families have pros & cons, but I'm always in favour of joint families. The greatest advantage in joint families is the support,in case of problems there're many hands to help or support you.

But now many people prefer to have nuclear families. They want to enjoy their life in owns way, which may not be possible in joint families.

My husband and I have lived with his father for 16 years, ever since we got married, so I guess we have a joint family. As much as I love my father in law, I really want my own home. I think this is a natural feeling but if we did have our own home, he would still move in with us. :p He doesn't make enough to live on his own. Yes, there are more hands to help in a crisis but there are more hands to mess up stuff too.

I grew up in a nuclear family and in my early teens had to then adjust to a joint family with step-siblings and a completely different home structure. Both are equally valid ways of life but it's really a matter of personal preference. Family is tough and good at the same time no matter what the structure is I think.

I have always had a joint family, but there have been a few times when it was also nuclear. When my father passed away in 1999 we stayed with my mother for about 6 months just so she would not be alone. Then in 2004, she lost her home to a fire and she stayed with us for about 3 months until she could get a new home. To me family is family and whatever that family happens to be comfortable with is all that matters.
