Default Should we mind if our President is religious?

I am curious to find out how many people believe that our president should or should not be religious? I am a religious myself and with my feelings aside could it be possible to seperate church and government with a religious leader?

I don’t think that being religious would help anyone from running the government. Politicians are just using religions to get some votes from its members. I remember that a religious leader once run for presidency in the Philippines but he loose for he didn’t know anything about running a country.

That wouldn't be a matter for me.I will not think about his religious thoughts instead will think about his dedication to the nation, love to the people & his works for our country. I'll never mind whether he's a religious person or not.

Politics and Religion will never mix together!

It is not right to use people beliefs for once personal gain. Running a government is far more complicated running a religious group.

Being in the government is dealing with other people with different beliefs and religion. A Politician and being religious is good for that person. But it is not good in using any religious affiliation to gain votes or whatever.

i dont think we should mind whether the president is religious or not, because it has nothing to do with the country or the civilians of the country.
The only thing that we should bother is his nature, his behavior and especially his capability to lead the country.

Church and state (at least in America) supposedly was separated a long time ago. The keyword here is supposedly. Although it may be separated on paper, how many times have you heard a politician use God's name to get votes? Or use God's name to get people to agree with them? It's sad, wrong, and just plain selfish.

It wouldn't bother me if the President was religious or not just as long as he had good character, policies, and morals.

As long as he treads lightly. Remember, this person also represents the US diplomatically overseas. If we have somebody who is bullheaded about their religion then they may be stepping on some toes of other countries beliefs.

There is religion and there is politics. Religion is not politics neither is politics religion. In the normal way, we may give to religion what belongs to religion and to politics what belongs to politics. However, a president who trusts in God could be a bonus because " In God we trust"

"In God We Trust" and "under God" were both added sometime in the 40s or 50s by people who thought the commies wouldn't be able to take it. It was a knee jerk reaction that somehow stuck. Removing them would be changing traditions, according to some people, but they weren't there for 100+ years, but sticking them in there is OK? Take them out, already.

I don't have a problem if our president is religious. What I do have a problem with, however, is when our president uses his religious views to shape our country. I was always taught that we had a freedom of religion in this country and when a president pushes his religious views on us, that is wrong.

I would say, President should be secular, he should represent all the people in the country. I don't mind him being religious, but being overly religious is dangerous. They tend to exploit their power to make life tough for people following other religions.

Religion and Region are two different words with different meanings. The President has nothing to do with the religion as far as his duty to the nation is concerned. The president of the Nation must be free from all the religious feelings. His decision drawn out of his religious feelings must not affect the nation and its people. The only religion for president when on duty is to serve the nation and work for the upliftment of its people and countrymen.

Yeah, I would say that religion and politics should really be separate. A president who is too religious would tend to look with favor to those religious activities even if we know its just used for propaganda purposes. They also tend to be biased when a religious leader gives them advises that are not really good for the country but is better for that certain religious sector alone. We should have a president who is fair in his/her judgment on all issues concerning the country he/she is ruling and not just with the chosen few.

I don't think it matters as long as his policies are based on ethics and not morals. There is a big difference, and there has to be a separation between someone's religious and political standing. Of course they will influence each other a little, but beyond the basic principle, the president should be able to look at thing objectively for the good of his country as a whole, not the good of one minority.

There is nothing wrong in our President being religious.......as long as he confines it to himself and avoids preaching the same to others....

Being truly religious also helps at times since being closer to god also effectively means the person is closer to his inner self. Such person are very effective in judging other people very well....and if the leader himself is so pure..he is destined to lead the country on a good and right path.

There is a vast difference between a truly religious person and the one who shows-off being a one......I would rather prefer my President to be the former one..than the latter.

Walker

Its doesn't matter if the president is religious or not, if he know what he is doing and he do it well its completely OK.
But as many here said he shouldn't mix between religion and politics.

No a president should not be religious, at least ours.

If a head is religious or prioritizes a religion than no person an himself preach all religions.

I am not religious. I go to churches, temples, gurudwaras, etc without any partial feeling.

I think much of the problems America has had over the last 8 years because of injecting ones supposed religion into the office of President(although I'm not sure at all if Bush is really as religious as he claims to be). Always watch out for leaders that claim that they were brought to that office by God and God is leading their way -- these are always the scariest. So I think a President should have a good sense of morality, which was probably ascribed to through religion -- but wearing it on ones sleeve is the scariest of all scary --

Hopefully, we will soon return a country and leader that goes by a sound moral code and leaves his ideologies at home --

I don't mind of the President is religious as long as he's capable and able to make good judgment and form policies that are for the benefits of the country. To me, the difference in religion is about the same as the difference in race of the president, so religion don't really matter to me. Its completely fine as long as the president does his job.

We should not worry about our president being religious. But if he is a religious fanatic as is in the case of the Iranian president, then that is a case for worry. Any sensible religious man would be able to govern his country well without showing any prejudices to citizens of different religions. But if he is a fanatic, then it is a totally different case.
