poverty fuels both terrorism and violence but is poverty the root cause of terrorism and violence? I saw an article online this morning entitled "poverty the root cause of terrorism". I could not read the article because I was in a hurry but the question just crossed my mind and I will like to know what others think. The Somali pirates who keep attacking innocent people, robbing them and sometimes brutally killing the captured people on the Indian/Arabian ocean are mostly poor, hopeless, and desperate men who perform such barbaric acts so they can get some money out of it. I have never seen a rich Somali pirate before. All Somali pirates are extremely poor men with no future at all. In such a case, it makes sense to say poverty is the root cause. It makes sense to say poverty is the root cause of terrorism/piracy and violence. Poor men sometimes revolt and cause disturbances especially if they feel they've been oppressed for quite a long time as we saw in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Ivory Coast, Yemen, etc. just a couple of weeks ago. In such cases, it makes perfect sense to say poverty is the root cause.
High poverty level explains the high illiteracy rate and the high illiteracy rate explains the huge number of terrorists in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, etc in today's world and so it makes sense to say poverty is the root cause of terrorism and violence. However, poverty is not always the root cause of terrorism and violence. I read an article just recently about Osama Bin Laden and in the article I learned that Osama Bin Laden was from a very wealthy home. He was from a very wealthy home but ended up a terrorist. In such a case I don't think it makes much sense to say poverty is the root cause. The root cause in Osama Bin Laden's case is the "moral breakdown" of the society or the home he grew up in.
What do you think? Is poverty always the root cause of terrorism and violence in the world today? What do you think are some of the major causes or the root causes of terrorism and violence in today's world?
