If it is a private, religious school then I don't see a problem with it. But if it is a public school then I dont think any one religion should be taught as part of the curriculum. I think it is important to teach about the major religions of the world as a topic though, but not as a theology.

I agree, it should only be taught in private religious schools only, and would be touched a little in public schools. Children would still need to be educated about the major religious organization, not to draw them to change affiliations, but so they can have general knowledge on the said organization. And children also need not be forced to attend religion classes especially if its not their religious affiliation, although they have the option to attend it or not.

religion is indeed a very sensitive issue, and to be taught in schools when the mind of children is so naive and can imbibe any thing deeply without thinking what is acceptable and what is not. teaching religion is alright but only up to the extent when it does not cross the limit of Hippocracy and turn in to a wrong obsession.

We should be taught about ALL religions in school, so we have an complete understanding and there can be no prejudice based on stereotypes or assumptions. I don't think there should be religious schools, it creates segregation in society.

it is a complex thing. In some societies, religion is a part of culture, not something personal. religion makes them what they are. So, these countries teach religion in schools. but I would prefer a class in school in where by teacher and student will discuss and learn about why they should become good men and women, why they should always speak the truth, why they should be kind etc. these teachings can be done in non-religious point of view too. And, learning these things are very important.

There's so many religions nowadays that it's impossible to teach them all objectively and equally in school, so I advocate to keep it out. It's up to the parents to teach their kids values and the subjective parts of life, while in my opinion, the school's job is to teach them the objective facts. Also, at least in the United States, church and state need to be kept apart.

I never had any kind of religious studies in school and I think they should keep it that way. Many people don't want other religions forced upon them. Like for example I had a Muslim class mate whose family was really into religion and I don't think they would like the fact that their son was being forced to study some one else's religion. Well, that's my opinion anyway, keep religion out of schools.

I completely agree with you guys, as most of the schools in our area, especially all the english medium are christian schools . But, their rules are very strict there about this matter. They do not even force the children to say there pledges .

I know that religion will never be taught in school because it is far too controversial and there are so many religions that it would take another year of schooling to cover them all.
But as an atheist I would love to see religion taught in school. Why? Because in school kids are allowed to ask questions. In bible school (or whatever it is called in each religion) kids are told what to believe and aren't allowed to ask questions. If kids were actually encouraged to read their religious books and were tested on it the world would see a whole lot more rejection of religion. I always ask Christians a simple question (How many animals of each kind did Noah take on the ark?) and have NEVER had even one Christian give me the correct answer. (Read Genesis 7:2-3 if you thought the answer was 2) I figure if they didn't even read Genesis, the first book of the Bible, then they really don't have a clue as to what the rest of the book really says. That's the reason why pastors tell Christians not to debate atheists, because we have read the book and have just cause to reject all the crap in it. I once had a teacher get all upset with me because she couldn't write Bible verses on the board. I told her I personally had no problem with it as long as *I* got to choose which verses were displayed. Once I showed her a few she promptly dropped the request to post them. Imagine that! |

I think that religion should be taught and practiced at home and in private schools that are specifically religious, but not in public schools. However, I do think that informative and educational courses SHOULD be taught in elementary and high schools about all of the religions in order to open students' minds to other beliefs and ways of life and break away from stereotypes and fear associated with particular religions.
