Almost everybody knows or has heard about America. It is true Africa is the most famous continent on earth but America or the United States of America is the most famous country on earth and there is no doubt about it. America used to be the most powerful nation on earth just a few decades ago without any doubt. America to me is still the most powerful nation on earth but that is just my opinion because several other people out there don't consider America the most powerful nation on earth but that is just by the way. Is the most famous America a Christian nation or a secular republic? I read an article on cnn today about this topic and the writer made some interesting points why America might or might not be a Christian nation.
One of the founding fathers of America who built America from scratch by name Thomas Jefferson said "All men are created equal" and are "endowed by their Creator" with the right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." This sounds very religious(Christian) to me. This phrase forms the basis of America. The American constitution and other laws and regulations were based on this phrase. But does this phrase makes America a Christian nation? Another interesting thing to consider is the Pledge of Allegiance which goes like this "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all.
This pledge of allegiance without a doubt makes America a religious country and if America is a religious country then there are just two possibilities; A Christian nation or a Judeo-Christian nation. Also, on every American coin I see "In God we trust" which means God is part of America.
However, the same founding father (Thomas Jefferson) who said the above phrase also made it very clear "a wall of separation between church and state". The keyword here is "wall". It is not just a bridge but a wall separating Church and State. In other words, the church has nothing to do in common with the state. This sounds very "Atheistic" to me. Does this phrase makes America a secular republic?. I read another article about a month ago online and in that article the writer referred to America as the "world's market square". In other words, America is like a market place where people do buy and sell and he also made some interesting points although not that convincing to me. People come from several places to the market square to buy and sell goods. Nobody is born in the market square. It is true America is a land of immigrants but some people were born in America and that makes America different from a market square.
Some people think America is a Christian nation. others think America is a secular republic. I have been reading a lot but none of the articles I've read so far makes a clear-cut. What do you think? Is America the "world's market square"? Is America a religious/Christian nation or a secular republic?
