What is the single most important thing we can do to improve society?

As citizens of the world, what is the single most important thing we can do to improve society? For example, for me it is educating a child. Just a single child to begin with. Who knows if we all take it upon ourselves to focus on one thing, it might create a cascading effect and society might be better for it.

So, what is the single thing you can do to improve the society around you;And why haven't you done it yet?

one can't change goverments, alone or together,
even the powerful must know there place or be
eliminated, by what's ever most appropriate for
the situation, hence the common folk of a nation,
stand even less of a chance, we've made ourselves
weak in our home land and now we want to save the
world around us, to late we've discoverd a sad fact
of life, accept everything and eventually, everything
become's acceptable, most of all, the unacceptable,
itself . . .

I think the single most important thing we can do would be to serve as a model for others. So I'd agree with both Ben and Indiescribe. We need to be brave and subversive in an appropriate, non violent way and we need to educate our children.

Yes, Joy...absolutely. The single most important thing we can do to improve society is to improve ourselves. If the 'unit' improves can the 'whole' be far behind. More often than not we blame our neighbor, our state, our leaders for all the ills around us. But if we can only make a little improvement to our own lives we can further the cause by a step.

I think that not standing for corruption is very important. When we figure out that if the people lead their leaders must follow we might do this, this does all begin with changing ourselves though.

I think the one thing that we can do to improve society is to stop all the necessary hate that plagues the world, once we learn to love people for who they are and not try to change that, the world will be a better place.

Save the environment by doing your bit in recycling, using less resources and walk (instead of driving).

I think the single most important thing right now is to teach tolerance. To learn how to co-exist. Until we all learn to work together towards our worldly goals nothing will be accomplished.

That absolutely makes a lot sense. Without tolerance for one another there can be no peace. Intolerance brings war, fear, and disunity. By learning to accept each others' limitations and take that extra step to love one another, then this world will be a better place for all.

Selflessness is probably the most important aspect for me. I think serving as a positive example factors into this in many different ways as does refusing to give in to hateful influences or ignorance.

Some great replies guys. If we can only take this attitude into the outside world and follow each others examples, the world would be better for it. Just a small deed from each other would collectively make for a better world. It could be something as simple as picking up a piece of litter and throwing it into a trash can.

Yes, true...paying tax is vital

but that is something which we don't have to do with a great lot of 'effort'. The government sits with it's big stick and we pay up.

The most important thing all citizens should strive to do is.....BE HELPFUL TO ALL !!!

We all need to develop this attitude of helping others.....We all are so much engrossed in money making and within our family lives that we forget the basic concept of society formation.

Human beings started living in groups and society so that they can become helpful to each other....

But alas.....after several centuries and decades, we have completely forgotten to help other unknown people without any expectations in return !!!

It seems....we have taken this saying too seriously....God helps those who helps themselves...

The most important is to spread awareness about various socio-economical differences in the society also to tell people how to fight against them.

I think the most important thing that we can do now is to help the poor and needy. A lot of us are fortunate and live comfortable, but there are lots of people out there who are struggling in life and needs our help greatly. We can just start with ourselves and lend a helping hand to those in need. If everyone do so, the society will be more gracious and caring and it'll make it a better place for us to live in.

I have to say that I think the single most important thing we can is to educate. It has been proven over and over again that education is your key out of poverty as well as enlightening you on things that might form prejudices in the less educated mind. You can give people stuff, money, houses... but education is truly something that no one can lose or have taken away...

To have a no tolerance attitude towards corruption. Stronger law enforcement. This actually is under the control of the government to implement. To teach tolerance an selflessness to people sounds easier then done. You cannot teach people to be kind but you sure can teach them to obey the law.

we should be responsible citizens by upholding the law and helping the aged and infirm whenever possible. participate actively in forums so feedback gathered could help to improve the society. of course, do not incite racism and hate remarks on the net for the freedom of expression is bounded by a respect of one's belief and faith

There are so many things one can do to improve society, yet few actually execute them. It is mainly because they believe that their effort is insignificance compared to the problems the world faces, so they choose to do nothing. However, they fail to realize that if everyone bears the same mindset, then humanity is already lost. If we want to change the world for the better, we need to start from the little things, from ourselves. Once we have improved ourselves, we can attempt to influence others and extent his circle to everyone around you, to your family, friends, colleagues and even strangers. This is the right way of thinking, and the solution to today's problem.
