Default The Future of Iraq - can Iraq Remain Peaceful Once US leaves?

Do you think it will be able to sustain itself once the US leaves or will it go into a series of Civil Wars until things become stable again?

I honestly don't think the US has done much good there, sure they got rid of the tyrant but it appears that it's not enough to really reform their government.

I think they had a government system that would have flopped in the west, but was working just fine there. Granted, Saddam Hussein was a grade A mutant, and horrible human being but he did keep the country up and running.

Don't think they'll be able to

As soon as the US pulls out, the groups there will be fighting for power, especially the two large Islamic groups the shi'a and sunni. Militia groups (the Iraq equivalents of the Taliban) will try and take power. Iraq will be plagued with fighting and instability, much like Afghanistan has been the last 30 years

I don't understand first, some body invades a country to remove its ruler (yes he was a bad man) now who gave them the right to do so?

If they were kill them selves what bad was it doing to the western allies??

If a tyrant is ruling on them let the people revolt and remove them, who gave them the right to indulge in other countries affairs?

After bombing it in the first gulf war, and putting sanctions for 11 years and making it stagnant in development and staging a false war for OIL and reducing the country to stone age, testing their latest weapons as a experiment grounds, using depleted uranium (check google if you don't know) in their bombs, now when they have used and gathered its resources and made huge money speaking of their future?

I am ashamed to be a human

Iraq should be able to sustain itself. The United States has helped it learn enough about the basic infrastructure of society that when we do leave Iraq, we should be able to look back and see them living in a country that has the basic necessities and hopefully will grow into something beautiful and worth living in.

I think USA should withdraw its troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. The situation is only deteriorating in those countries and they haven't improved anything in Iraq and Afghanistan, they have just taken those countries to stone-age.

Iraq is really in turmoils right now. I pity those innocent kids, young people, mothers who lost their sons and husbands during the war. It is really hard to picture out what would happen to Iraq in the future, with the great devastation, the ruins, and loss the country has incurred. These happened because of greediness of the power-hungry, corrupt leaders wanting to lord over its people.

In order for Iraq to have a peaceful future, they need to humble themselves, choose a wise leader who could reform their government and prioritize the needs of their people.

I think a civil war is imminent whether we stay there or not, though violence seems to be decreasing in the most active regions, mainly due to the troop surge. Once we pull out, it will no longer be in our hands. I do have high hopes for their government, and hope they will prove us wrong and keep the area stable, but it seems unlikely.

We should have never gone in there in the first place.

The after effects of such a terrible war will lasts longer than what many might think....

It takes ages for mankind to develop a civilization but one ruthless leader can destroy the whole of nation with his stupidity in matter of months.

I am really afraid of how is Iraq going to stand up on its own...in future..after the American troops completely withdraw from that land.

There is an urgent need for wise local people to form a group and start moblising the attention of native Iraqis and achieve some sort of control over the psyche of common people for them to lead their country out of the present mess...

One natural leader has to definitely shape up quickly so that he can command orderly functioning of the masses without forceful gun control.

Regards,

Walker

I agree with this. I have heard a lot of experts comment that this war will last at least another 20 years, even if we pull most of our troops, and that it is unlikely we wont keep small forces rotating there for decades to come to help police the cities and borders.

I have to say Iraq really is something that puzzles me. I don't know how that situation can be fixed, but I also feel a responsibility as an American to try and help out. I feel that when a country over-throws a government that country has a responsibility to help that country get back on its feet.

It is however difficult to keep that in mind when American troops keep dying over there.

If US cannot create a democratic Iraq before they leave, then Iraq is probably going to be looking at sectarian violence and going to be divided in to three countries based on the population. One each for Shias, Sunnis and Kurds. I hope America can leave a viable democratic Iraq behind by the time they leave.

The removal of US forces from Iraq will be best for the future of Iraq, Al Qaeda has no roots in Iraq. Currently Al Qaeda is on a run. It is right there either in Afghanistan or in the border areas of Pakistan. Why cant US unilaterally propose to UN for peace keeping force , Why do they spend their dollars in Iraq ?? Wat will Us face if they with draw ?? Iraq does not have Nukes, The are in a god damn civil war , The only reason they want Iraq now is as a staging point for a war with Iran !!

I think that the same type of leaders that were there before the US arrived will be the owns taking over Iraq. You shouldn't try to instill democracy in a country that has never really had anything like it before. I honestly don't think that democracy would take hold there like everyone thinks that it would. There are a lot of cultural issues that go against something like that.

it would take a long time for iraq to heal and recover from such a huge loss. they need to be strong and united to be able to get iraq to stand on its own again. they should know by now how to distinguish if they're leader is a dictator or not, they should not let history repeat itself.

Thing will sort themselves out eventually, as long as America and the other countries get out as soon as possible, so Iraq doesn't grow to hate us even more and make an enemy out of the west again. That's the problem although democracy is the ideal, it doesn't always work and who are we to say otherwise.

I think that there is only a good future for Iraq if the people are willing to embrace democracy. The coilition troops can point the way, but if the Iraqis will not participate in fair elections and prefer to bomb each other, then there is really little we can do for them no matter how long we stay. I hope that we are able to create a viable democracy in Iraq before leaving, because if we don't then civil war and the rising of another tyrant are the obvious results.
