Prisons are there for a reason, to teach the criminals a lesson for their crimes. Now if the prison starts treating these criminals nicely then they wouldn't mind committing crimes again once they are out. Most criminals wouldn't mind going back even for a longer term since they know its not going to be as bad as they expected.

We should increase the death penalty and kill 20 times as many people. Rather than letting evil criminals out early because the prison is being overcrowded, kill a few thousand of them to make room for more evil criminals. They need to experience pain and suffering for their crimes! Take away ALL of the nice things they have in prison like TV and movies and let them only be able to read, take classes to gain some skill, and get their necessary exercise.

In my opinion a rehab system would be infinitely preferable to the prison system. The prison system in my mind is designed to incapacitate (to protect the rest of society) and punish criminals (which usually hopes to deter future criminal actions).
In my mind, something like Barnett's Restitution system would be infinitely preferable, where we shift the system's focus to the victim, and put the weight of the reperations on the offender. |

Although prisons must be improved, prisons shouldn't be paradise because if you make prisons paradise as it is the case in most western countries more people will love to go to prison. In Africa, most prisons are worse than hell and nobody wants to go to jail because going to jail in most cases means death in most African countries. A prison cell made for 2 people can contain as many as 60 people in some African prisons. You can just imagine. If you spend a week in a Nigerian jail you will never come back a complete human being because of the pain and torture people go through in Nigerian prisons. The same is the case in Congo, in Liberia, in Sudan, and in most African countries

and why must we use the tax payers money to feed, cloth and make life better for criminals? don't forget those people are criminals and they deserve worse treatment. Use the tax payers money to do something that will benefit the tax payer not the criminal in jail

I think that sometimes we pity criminals too much. Prison is not a place of reform, and it does not turn “bad people into good people.” From what I see, it is quite the opposite. Criminals tend to get even more frustrated, angry, and dangerous after being in jail. Letting most criminals out of jail creates more problems than it solves.
In some parts of the world, jails seem almost like hotels. The inmates can enjoy many (free of charge) amenities and services while in jail such as access to libraries, the internet, education opportunities (some complete college degrees), entertainment performances, gyms, social interaction, shelter, and free food. Most homeless people and regular hard-working tax-paying people do not receive these kinds of luxuries. The only time I ever feel sorry for inmates is when they are innocent or wrongfully charged with a crime and I am against torture and abusing human life, but there are many more important issues facing the world today other than the well-being of criminals. |
