Default New sanctions on Iran - National Intelligence Evaluation

What is the deal here, we have already seen the NIE (National Intelligence Evaluation?) Report saying Iran abandoned nuclear weapons ideas in 2003. Whats with the new sanctions and the rhetoric much like that leading into the illegal and unwarranted Iraq war?

Actually it is BUSH who wants the war, The America people didn't really elect him the first time, and his getting elected the second time wasn't by a landslide, with the Electoral College over riding the popular vote again.

No but he was elected at any rate. I agree though that the american people don't want another war. I don't, anyways. But I thought that Iran was going ahead with their nuclear weapons program or least testing?

Default Link to the NIE Report, IRAN has not tested or developed.

They would be years away from testing if they even were pursuing nuclear weapons, but as my original thread stated, the National Intelligence report of 2003 stated they abandoned their pursuit of nuclear weapons. This came out only last October-ish and has been largely ignored.

By our own intelligence, they are developing nuclear energy, not weapons.

I think the push is to equate the presence of nuclear production, regardless of its goals, with the development of nuclear weapons.

It is as if the fall of the Soviet Union left the US government with no one to get the citizens to focus their hate on, outside of the USA, so a new enemy is needed.

Does that make sense?

American foreign policy is dictated by commercial interests. Always has been. Iran is a constant thorn in the American hide and a target for rabble rousers in the government. It could be also a carefully disguised strategy for oil control in the middle east.

It does make sense. You make an interesting point about having no one to hate outside the U.S. This is an idea I haven't had and a concept I haven't explored.

That is an interesting concept to be sure. Part of the Red Scare had to do with such a radically alien culture being put on the other side and it's quite easy to do the same thing with Middle Eastern nations. It's just another West versus East in many respects.
