Default New and Old Media Co-exist Today

With the explosive growth of the internet, the death of old media like TV and books had been predicted many times but the demise of such old good media had still not happened but in fact thriving.

This was confirmed by a recent US study indicated that nearly a third of all households internet activity in US takes place while the users watches TV, suggesting that new and old media often share rather than compete for attention.

What is your take?

Both old and new generation media have their own advantages over one another. For example look at ebooks. Although ebooks are easier to buy and usually come at cheaper price too people still prefer real books that are made with paper. This is because real books are much more convenient to read. Newspapers are also more convenient to read compared to internet news sites.

Old Media is starting to go by the wayside. You are seeing more and more newspapers go to online editions only, such as the Christian Science Monitor. It is much more profitable to slim down staff and go to an online edition only. However, old media in books is thriving actually, but new media books, like eBooks aren't doing well at all. It is an interesting situation for certain.

Well, using internet and watching TV at the same time doesn't really surprise me

Internet is an "anytime, anywhere" thing. Anytime you desire, you hop on and do something quick, and that could be during your TV program

And the typical American household keeps the TV on even when they aren't really watching it anyway

I agree that new and old media complement and supplement each other. While quite a lot of research in newspaper offices does take place with the help of the Internet, news channels tend to rely on newspapers in more ways than one. The presence of newspapers is heavily marked in all societies. Come to think of it- I guess many of us still take the newspaper to the bathroom rather than the laptop.

Haha. This line brought a smile to my face. Indeed, I can't imagine bringing a laptop the bathroom to read.

Yeah, I agree that both new and old media complement each other. Even though the internet has made it easier for us to access information and get first hand up-to-date news from all around the world, we're still using old media (maybe we're already too used to it). Old media like newspaper are also easier to carry around so we can just read them anytime anywhere while a laptop or computer needs electricity to power up. Its more environmental friendly to read newspaper too! :p

The internet make it much easier for us to do researches, to browse through and access a wide range of information easily. But the stuffs available on the net may not be that reliable, so we got to filter the information ourselves. Books and newspaper reports are less biased and may be a more reliable source for us to gather information since the reporters have a professional guideline to follow.

I'm glad we have the internet now. I can't imagine life without it. Just imagine having to go to the library every single time we need to do research!
