Is it safe to travel to South America?

I've heard of several instances where foreigners, especially Americans have been abducted and/or murdered in South American countries -- It seems this is happening in areas that once were thought to be safe for tourist to travel in -- what is causing this? Could it be because of America/European foreign policy in and around the world? And where are the safe areas for tourist to visit?

I hear that it is a very good deal in terms of money exchange, but if I get raped and murdered what good is saving a few dollars?

I think some of the places are safe and some places are not. I would prefer to go to a popular tourist destination where every tour guide have been there before. But still, you have to stay alert with the situation. Don't bring a jewelry or wear something fancy.

guess there's no safe place is the world now. wherever we go, the crimes are always there. these are brought by the hard times that the people have experienced and with no clear work or employment nor education will turn to criminal acts because its easy money. they don't have remorse anymore because their hearts are hardened by poverty and want.

Nowhere is safe, no matter where you are. Well, not much safer than the other, at least. South America? Ahh, it's alright, if you have:
Spanish
Common Sense
And are weary

My mother went to South Africa and she had no problems at all. She went backpacking and she really had fun. She went true save areas but I don't know the place name anymore. But before you go, check your route and make sure you go non-war areas. Ask your tourist information guide for more information and you will travel with no problems.
