Default exchanging our cultures via mail

I know many of us come from other lands, other cultures and maybe just another state. yet we are so different no matter where we live. the only way to break down walls and see how the other half lives is by communication, exchanging foods, recipes, patterns and basically stepping into anothers shoes, if only for one day.
I propose and exchange like this.
We each step out of our comfort zone and go into another culture, for only a day. Religion excluded.
we could send a newspaper, recipes post cards. what ever we could easily duplicate in each others homes and do in each others homes for only a day.

anyone game...

That is a good idea, julie- and especially for leaving religion out of it. That sometimes opens up to many cans of worms! :p I am always interested in exchanging recipes though.

Thumbs up

There are some 'languages' which the whole world speaks. Here's a small list -
1. Love

2. Music

3. Sports (esp. football)

4. Art

5. Food (if one is willing to experiment)

These could be the medium of exchange. Can anyone add to the list? Please do...

This is a great idea! I think any of the ideas above would work as a starting point. And once we've all left our comfort zones, how much more can we learn from each other?

I live in England, we have had a lot of of people coming into the country from Eastern Europe over the last few years as well as the steady stream of immigrants from further away. Now when we go to the supermarket or walk down the street it is common to hear people speaking in different languages. We have not been too keen to have all these newcomers in our country and it must have been quite difficult for them. Personally I am not keen to eat the sort of foods that they like, I am happy with my own food etc but I would like to know them better. I find a big smile works in any language. Just a few friendly words and a kind attitude can gradually break down barriers and help new people to feel at home. I think it is also important for them to try to learn English. If we all made a little extra effort with the people we meet it would make a very big difference.

As an Indian, I can vouch for the positive influence of different cultures, as India is an amalgamation of many diverse cultures. Their are good and bad influences in all cultures. If we distill the good of all the cultures, what a super-culture it would make! But it should be mixed with equal proportions of compassion, tolerance and openness.

How about Dance to add to your list? Attending different cultural festivities or shows is fun, and observing some of other peoples traditional dances would be one way to step out of our zone and into another avenue of culture.

This is one means to gain education, appreciation and learning experience of different cultures.

I think this is a really interesting idea but I'm not sure exactly how you would carry it out. Often you'll get the best exposure to other cultures by simply stepping out of your comfort zone as much as possible.

Indiescribe's list is great by the way.

Soon all of us would be able to add something else to the list. That is entertainment. Movies for instance. Or take soap operas. These days soap operas are getting syndicated from one country to the next. In India, we have some popular shows based on shows from Britain, Argentina, U.S and Spain. Though localized it shows that ideas can travel across distances.
