Before you help others, i think it is wise to help yourself first. I'm not saying that it is wrong to help others. Africa really needs some help in one way or the other. America is the world's richest nation yet i think America has the greatest number of homeless people more than any other country. President Bush sends billions to Africa while the number of homeless people in America grows. i don't think this is really helping anyone.

I always read and watch shows like 60 Minutes that talk about things like the problems in Africa. I do agree that our government needs to make sure more problems in America are addressed, before sending too much of our American tax dollars to another country, no matter where it goes. It is like in an airplane the flight attendant tells everyone to make sure to put there own oxygen mask on first, before helping a child or another person. How are we good Americans to Africa, or any other country, if we have so many homeless people, illiterates, high school dropouts, etc in our country? We claim to have the best educational system, highest opportunities, etc.
Just giving Africa money alone is not the answer. But before I go further, I saw a product on 60 minutes that is helping to lower the child starvation death rate in Africa. I'm sure that is a big part of that 30,000 number by what they were saying. I now understand the conditions more that create the situation for a child in any underdeveloped country, where they do not have proper basic nutritional food their first few years of life. Basics like water for starters is not even always available. Now there is an organization working on providing fresh water too. But the child's body needs certain nutrients the first few years of life in order to survive. There is a new product now handed out to many in Africa that is helping. The children love it. But another problem is how much AIDS takes out parents or children in a family. I think the AIDS problem is why there are so many orphans, which dominos to create more problems, when children do not have their parents. That was another story. I watch all those 'inside scoop with real people' type reporting in other countries like that. I like understanding what is 'really' going on, and not just what the government says is going on. I just have questions about the African government's role, or lace thereof, in desperate situations like basic medical and food needs not being met. That is just too much. |

First off, I agree completely that one must themselves be in good working order before they are going to benefit others. But honestly, we neither suffer the same as they do nor have we ever seen our children suffer in the manner that they do never to that extent. Most countries have programs and soup kitchens and some sort of manageable health care system not like these areas. If we can afford to spend billions of dollars a year in nuclear weapons development etc then it would not hurt us or take away from ours to help in more beneficial ways where it is needed.
I think that the average citizen can only do what is within their means to do and I would never cast a stone or blame to an individual but as a country on the whole I do and can not help but feel as a country every penny we waste is a life we could have saved. |
