Water Problems in Africa: Lack of Good Drinking water
During our trip to Africa, we came across this village in Mali. There is only one stream in the village which serves as the source of drinking water and the source of water for domestic purposes. This stream is the only source of water in the village besides rain water and the major problem is that, this stream is miles upon miles away from the village and people especially children have to walk miles upon miles every single day to fetch water.
They go to fetch water with pots and carry them on their heads and walk miles upon miles every day with heavy pots of water on their heads. I was shocked how these people survive because they don't even boil the water and they don't treat the water before drinking which to me is very dangerous because of diseases such as bilharzia and the guinea worm diseases which are very common in this part of the world.
We then decided to construct one borehole with a pump in the center of the village to provide them with clean water and at least save them the time and energy of having to walk miles just to fetch water every single day and these people were more than happy and they sang and danced just to thank us for given them clean water which isn't enough though for the entire village but they were very very happy.
If you have the time and energy and you are planning to go to Africa then these are some of the things you can do to help the poor people living in the villages. Don't just waste your time in the cities because life in the cities is far better than life in the villages. If you are able to get to Africa, then don't forget to visit a village and make a difference and you will never forget.
