Default Help a Rural Secondary School in Malawi Africa

Fairview Academy
P.O. Box 305
Kasungu, MALAWI

Dear Friends,
I start by introducing myself. My name is Winstone Mkwala living at Kasungu in Malawi.
GREETING TO YOU ! from Kasungu the warm heart of Malawi.
Kasungu is a district town in the central region of Malawi, about 150km north of Lilongwe the capital city.
I am the Director of Fairview Academy, a rural secondary school situated in the eastern outskirts of Kasungu Township.
Fairview Academy was established in 2005 switching from an orphan care centre into a secondary school. Seeing that there were many orphan care centres being opened around the area there was great need for a secondary school nearby. Our initial program was to help orphans and the vulnerable group such as young girls who drop out of school due to early pregnancies, those lacking parental support due to household poverty and victims of child abuse so that they get free admission at our school. This program has been on going but the problem is that more and more needy children seek our assistance and yet our resources are very limited. We can’t raise enough funds because we are more a charity than commercial. Our aim is to assist the needy and the less privileged in our community as this is within the fabrics of my Christian conviction as well as we help the government in its efforts to harness the education sector for the better.
For this reason Fairview Academy is a very poor school and we can’t effect any development because we have no funds for any school project. We are operating under pathetic conditions and our challenges are unprecedented.
Imaging a secondary school without desks, students sitting on dust floor, no library, no books, operating in temporary structures, no science lab and no computers. There is also need for hostels for boys as well as girls.
In desperation, we seek any possible assistance to initiate some development projects for Fairview Academy.
Please bear in mind that we are from rural place and we do not have any connections the way other prominent schools may have. Writing this e-mail has been the only way as a chance to voice out for the plight of a poor rural school in Malawi. Many well-wishers and donors focus in helping government-run schools but there is great need to help schools such as Fairview Academy because we play just an equal role in providing education to a Malawian child. The government itself plays a blind eye on our plight, donors too, because they think we are commercial yet there is nothing commercial in running a school like Fairview Academy.
So please consider and help us.
We want funds to 1. build better classrooms
2. construct a school library
3. build hostels for both boys and girls.
4. buy some computers, donations are welcome.
5. build a science laboratory.
WE EVEN CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR A BUY OUT BY ANY POSSIBLE FINANCIER TO TAKE OVER THE RUNNING OF THIS SCHOOL.
So far our children will have the benefit of it. We hear of celebrities such as Madonna who is helping Malawian orphans and has bought a piece of land to build a modern school for the orphans here in Malawi and Oprah Winfrey who built a modern school for poor South Africans, why not if possible this chance should come to Fairview Academy by having a financier who would help it to develop into a good rural school.
I am trying to have exposure, if you could help.

Subject: Help is on its way!!!

Dear Winstone,

My name is Clare P. Mullins, I am a 20 year old Irish student who is traveling to Africa in June and July. I read your email on line and your school is exactly what I am looking for in terms that I think I may be able to assist you financially.

A bit about myself; I have been long interested in setting up a charity in Malawi or a trust. As a student of Humanities, my University focuses and trains teachers, social care students, citizenship students and much more. I have traveled to Malawi and studied about the various difficulties faced by certain schools. I am interested in living in Africa in the future and working as an Anthropologist.

I have some experience in working with charities and trust funds, but this would be my first time venturing to set one up! It may not work out. But I am determined to help you and Fairview Academy. The initial amount of money that I may bring out in June or July may not be a lot initially, but Because I am associated with many Irish schools and organisations and have the determination, drive and attitude I do believe I could rally support in Ireland to fund your school initially for some of the things you require and maybe even help you get into talks about a take over. I would love to speak to you as soon as possible just to get an update as to where you are financially, what support you are receiving now and what is most in need of attention!

Your Academy caught my attention, because I am aware that many young students in Malawi do not make it past Primary levels of education and this is very worrying for me. I want young Malawian women and children to be able to have the opportunities they rightly deserve with a good, free Secondary education!!! And let me tell you, what you are doing is wonderful!

I am willing and eager to converse with you more about this and see can we come to some arrangements. I have a lot of wonderful ideas and suggestions, one being because my University trains teachers, I feel it would be a great opportunity and benefit to both sides for a school like yours to avail of our student teachers during our summer months to come out and help on a charity basis. Your children would benefit from Irelands finest up and coming young teachers and we would benefit from the experience culturally and socially.

Please do get in contact with me if you have time Winstone,
your email does not seem to be working, So please reply here first, thank you.

It would be my sincere pleasure to help you,

Yours Sincerely,
Clare Mullins.
