Sculptures, as an art form are not in the main stream yet, one can’t just walk into the next art gallery and see one. Eitherway, they turn heads when people pass by one by its sheer size only if not a shock to the expectations.
An exhibition by local sculptors is opening at the Franco Namibia Cultural Centre (FNCC) next week to show the public what a marvel a sculpture can be.
Arts group, Arts in the House, with the support of FNCC and the Spanish Corporation will present what they describe as “a unique collective exhibition solely dedicated to showcase sculptures created by locally based artists”. The exhibition titled ‘Sculptures in Space’ is the first of its kind in the country and will feature around 30 artworks done by more than 20 sculptors.
The ensemble of artworks will include selections from Joseph Madisia, Kay Cowley, Barbara Pirron, Shiya Karuseb, Josia Shikongo, Hercules Viljoen, Cristine Salvoldi, Alpheus Mvula, John Nampala, Imke Rust, Elias Shiwoohamba, Samuel Kamati, Isayi Haidongo, Abneil Enkali, David Amukoto, Molabatsi and many more. The artworks will be displayed all over the FNCC premises and visitors will be able to discover a total different space transformed by the sculptures that will surprisingly appear and fit everywhere. Tulipanwe will also add its weight to this grand exhibition by lending some of its artworks.
“Sculptures in Space aims to promote the diversity of the Namibian sculptures and to show the diversity of space that could welcome this type of artwork,” Art in the House said.
The exhibition will concurrently display various sized and site-specific sculptures for the public to enjoy”.
Art in the House is a locally based association founded by Aurélie Zannier and Alpheus Mvula. According to co-founder Zanier, it serves simply to promote Namibian artists, contemporary Namibian art and culture through original Special Events. Still in its early days, ‘Sculptures in Space’ will be its second ever event.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 12 October to 30 November and French Ambassador to Namibia, Jean Louis Zoël will deliver the keynote address.
