In my village in Africa we drink directly from the stream

I read it somewhere online that people in the United States don't drink tap water because the tap water system in the United States is contaminated and that those who drink tap water often get complications. In my village in Africa However, we drink directly from the stream. We do not even bother to boil the water before drinking but nothing happens after drinking it. Is it true that the tap system in America is contaminated? If so, why would a rich nation like the United States of America (the richest country for that matter) be using contaminated water?
