Acid rain seemed to be all the talk in the 80s but now we rarely seem to hear about it. Why is this?

Has the problem gone away? Was it just media hype?

And...if it was media hype... are there perhaps other issues that are at the forefront of the media at the moment that will be equally low key in, say, 20 years from now?
